A Language Exchange in Italy
Diana is a Greenheart Travel high school abroad participant in Italy for the semester. In addition to living with a host family and attending school, Diana is an active Greenheart Travel Club member. Below she describes her experience volunteering for the Club as an English Teacher. Diana has already volunteered over 80 hours during her program!
I have been staying in Milano, Italy for a total of 4 1/2 months now for my high school study abroad program. It has been an amazing experience and I’m not ready to return home to the U.S. at the end of January. I have made some amazing friends. I attend a local high school where during the day I attend different classes and teach them English. I have had conversation classes, pronunciation classes, grammar lessons, and cultural lessons. It has been such a rewarding experience.
Students in Italy lack motivation and don’t care much about learning English. Since I’ve started teaching classes, the teachers have told me that the grades have improved and the students interest and concentration has improved. I’ve been asked by the teachers and the students in the school to return to Italy and teach them again next year. It is a great feeling to know that I am able to make a difference. I have also had students tell me that I’ve made them realize how important studying in school and learning English is. I’m glad I was able to help these students and show them how much potential they have if they apply themselves. They are amazing people and I will miss them all when I return to the US.
Grazie Mille and happy holidays,
