Volunteer in Spain Promoting Environmental Awareness
This volunteer program in Ibiza is ideal for volunteers who have an active interest in sustainable living and are committed to protecting the environment.
Greenheart Travel’s Casita Verde (Green House) is an experiential eco-education center that showcases the best practices for sustainable living and alternative energies. Situated in a beautiful valley near the village of San Jose, Ibiza, the center includes nearly 14 acres of working farm land powered by wind and solar energy. It stands as a functioning example of green practices, as well as a leader in educating the community on how to make sustainable choices.

What do our participants say about the program?
“I didn’t realize until I got back home how much of a deep impact the program had on me. I loved living a healthy, more sustainable and green lifestyle. Since coming home, I’ve gone out and bought lots of books on healthy eating because I’m trying to buy only organic products. But also, I have become much more relaxed and open as a person thanks to living with everyone in Ibiza. Overall, I’ve got a new outlook on life and I’m very much enjoying it! Thank you for providing me such a great experience in Casita Verde!” Ibiza Volunteer Abroad Alumnus, Guy Whittaker

What is the typical work day like?
Projects typically run 5 days a week from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. You will have a siesta or break in the middle of the day, per standard Spanish culture. Casita Verde runs an open house every Sunday which volunteers are expected to participate in, so your weekends/off days may fall on odd days compared to what you are used to.
Will there be a language barrier?
The island is very accustomed to people speaking different languages because of the diverse community of all Eurpeans. It shouldn’t be too hard to find somebody who speaks English, but knowing a few Spanish phrases will ensure safe travels.
Is my program fee tax deductible?
Greenheart Travel is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, so a portion of your Volunteer Abroad program fee may be tax deductible. Contact us for more information. We recommend that you also consult with your tax professional to discuss your particular case, as application of tax laws can vary based on individual circumstances.
Can I apply with my friend/spouse/significant other?
Absolutely! We are happy to accept friends and couples.
What vaccinations will I need?
When traveling to any destination, make sure your routine vaccines are up to date. Try to schedule an appointment with your doctor 4-6 weeks before your trip. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus vaccine, varicella (chicken pox) vaccine, and your yearly flu shot. Make sure to check with your doctor about 4 weeks before you leave. Check the CDC website for more information.
How much extra cash should I bring?
We suggest planning a budget that gives you room for souvenirs, sightseeing, exit tax, transportation not included in the fee, and anything you might forget. You can read up more on the currency exchange website to determine how much you will need.
Can I travel on the weekends?
For the weekends, hiking and enjoying the outdoors are your best choices. You can take small trips that last only two days, as long as you are back in time for your volunteer work. The best times to truly go sightseeing would be before or after your volunteer time.
What if I get sick abroad?
You will be covered by a mandatory medical insurance for the duration of your program. You will receive your policy brochure and insurance card via email 2 weeks prior to departure. If you have an emergency, notify your local coordinator immediately and they will ensure you receive the best treatment possible.
What is the best way to contact friends and family from home?
Using Skype through the internet is probably the easiest. Phone service is not very reliable, but you are welcome to bring your own cell phone that works internationally.
