Overview
Join Sea Turtle Conservation in Indonesia
Indonesia is one of the most important places in the world for sea turtle conservation. With its endless stretches of coastline, the country is home to incredible species like the Olive Ridley, Green, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, and the majestic Leatherback turtle. On islands such as Bali, Java, Sumatra, and Papua, turtles return year after year to nest, making these beaches vital for their survival.
Unfortunately, sea turtles face many challenges. From habitat loss and plastic pollution to poaching and accidental capture in fishing gear, their survival is under constant threat. Climate change also affects nesting conditions, even altering the balance of male and female hatchlings. By joining a conservation program, you can directly help protect these ancient creatures and ensure their future in our oceans.
Why It Matters
Sea turtles aren’t just beautiful to watch — they play an essential role in keeping our oceans healthy. They help maintain seagrass beds, support coral reefs, and balance marine food chains. Healthy turtle populations mean healthier oceans, and healthier oceans benefit everyone.
Conservation also makes a difference for local communities. Turtle nesting grounds bring in eco-tourism, which provides sustainable income and encourages long-term protection of wildlife. By taking part, you’ll not only be helping turtles but also supporting the people who live alongside them.
Your Role in Nusa Penida
The Sea Turtle Conservation Project is based on the laid-back island of Nusa Penida, just a short 45-minute boat ride from Bali. Since 2013, the project has worked hand-in-hand with the local community to protect endangered sea turtles, and volunteers have been at the heart of its success.
As a participant, your days may include:
- Identifying and monitoring different turtle species
- Helping collect and protect eggs
- Monitoring nests and caring for hatchlings
- Assisting baby turtles in their first steps toward the ocean
No two days are ever the same — and depending on the season, you might even witness the unforgettable moment of releasing hatchlings into the sea.
Life on the Island
Nusa Penida is a hidden gem. While the lifestyle is more basic than the busy mainland, you’ll wake up to the sound of the ocean, live steps from the beach, and experience Bali’s quieter, more authentic side. After a day of meaningful work, you can relax with fellow participants, explore the island, or join group activities.
It’s not just volunteering — it’s an adventure, a chance to connect with people from around the world, and an opportunity to make a real difference for one of Earth’s most fascinating creatures.
By joining the Sea Turtle Conservation Project, you’re not only protecting endangered turtles — you’re contributing to the future of our oceans, supporting local communities, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
