Life After Travel – How Studying Abroad can Influence Future Plans

When participants of Greenheart Travel programs come home from their study programs from all over the world, we’re always curious to see what is next for them. Will they continue to travel? Will they use what they’ve learned about cultural immersion in their everyday life?

We asked some of our recent senior alumni if their time abroad had influenced their plans for after high school and were so happy to hear where everyone is headed!

“I’ll be starting college at Stanford in the fall, my program has made me want to continue studying Spanish and do a study abroad during university.” – Aaron, High School Abroad Spain

“I am going to the University of Washington and am planning to major in Biology and Japanese. My time abroad definitely influenced my way of thinking and set me up for wanting to study abroad again in college. It made me more interested in languages and to want to become more fluent in Japanese.” – Lucy, High School Abroad Japan

“I loved my exchange so much that one of the reasons I chose my university was because it has a really good study abroad program! I cannot wait to do something like it again. This year I am starting four year college at Gonzaga university!” – Marion, High School Abroad Netherlands

“Absolutely. It gave me a better idea of what is out there. It has only fanned the flame that was my deep interest of the rest of the world. I’m looking to major in international relations. I’m very excited for the future.” – Simon, High School Abroad Spain

“My mindset about life has shifted to myself as an integral part of a space and thus I foresee myself changing my major from not just something I am interested in but something I contribute too. It’s not always about what we can get from something it’s how we can give back to it in a way that nourishes us. I will be starting college as an ecological engineering student, working at a community coffee shop, and enjoying my time exploring yet another new city and what life looks like in it!” – Elizabeth, High School Abroad Argentina

“Spending time in my school’s band in Japan solidified my desire to be a professional musician. The dedication and work ethic of everyone in that band was incredible, and I had an amazing time experiencing a different approach to large ensemble music than I’m used to in America. I also loved living abroad and plan to go on exchange again during college. I’m starting college at UCLA and majoring in music performance. I’ll also probably minor in linguistics.” – Asher, High School Abroad Japan

“Yes, my time abroad influenced my decision to seek out colleges with robust study abroad programs and opportunities. Roughly 60% of Dartmouth students study abroad at least once, which heavily factored into my decision, and my time abroad also solidified my desire to minor in Spanish.” – Brynn, Teen Summer Language Camp Spain

“The program influenced me to study abroad again in college, and because of my host mom, steer my major more towards environmentalism.” – Robert, High School Abroad Ireland

“Yes for sure it [Greenheart] did!! I got to experience living in a different country, which made me realize that college abroad was a possibility for me and that I didn’t want to live in the US my entire life. I’m starting college at the University of Edinburgh for Ecological and Environmental Sciences!” – Raina, High School Abroad Italy
