  • Join our Alumni groups on Facebook and LinkedIn to connect with other world travelers, receive the latest event news, and access exclusive professional development resources.

Join the Greenheart Club

Join a network of generations of global leaders. When you travel on a Greenheart Travel program, you are automatically eligible to be a member of the Greenheart Club. This unique community equips you during and after your Greenheart Travel program to make deeper connections through volunteer service, offers access to Greenheart Grants and gives you a chance to connect with Greenheart alumni outside of Greenheart Travel programs from countries all over the world.

As a member of the Greenheart Club, you will receive guidance in strategizing creative ways to give back to your community, have access to tools for tracking your impact and receive incentives for your efforts as a global leader.

How to get involved with the Greenheart Club:

Once you have been accepted on a Greenheart Travel program, you’ll be able to join the Greenheart Club. Once you have volunteered, you can log your hours in your online account and start tracking your impact!

“I truly believe traveling and experiencing new cultures is an important thing everyone should experience. Being exposed to new ways of life and seeing different ways people live really broadens the mind and helps us to see the world in a new and better light. I want to inspire students at my university to travel abroad and experience new, amazing opportunities.”

PaulaPaula Cardona

Paula Cardona attends Chatham University, a small private college located in Pittsburgh, PA. She is currently a senior and double majoring in Global Policy and Criminology. She is very active on campus as President of her chapter Sigma Alpha Pi, an Honor Society that supports students in their academic pursuits. She also belongs to the Undergraduate Budgeting Committee and is Vice-president of the Criminology club. Paula is originally from Colombia and has lived in several countries throughout her life. Her last trip abroad was to Colombia for an internship opportunity, and prior to that, she studied abroad in Italy.

“I beg young people to travel, to take the initiative to get a passport, to pack a bag and explore the world. I love encouraging people to get out of their comfort zones and explore different cultures, foods, and languages. Traveling to me is very important because it says a lot about a person; it tells you what they are capable of and what they are not afraid to face. It tells you how strong someone is that they have ventured to a new world all by themselves without fear of adapting to new environments.’’

Sarah Gourevitch

Sarah is a junior at the University of Chicago, studying public policy with a specialization in education. She continues to play music and travel whenever she gets the chance! Sarah has returned to Vienna several times since her semester abroad with Greenheart Travel: to visit her host family and friends, to continue her German studies, and to complete a research project about language acquisition and education. Check out her video introduction! Read Sarah’s blog from her travels in Austria.

“I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything… Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses”–Bill Bryson.  Sarah adds, “ I think it’s important to sometimes abandon a comfortable routine to explore somewhere new.”

Marjorie McVay

Marjorie attends the University of South Carolina, majoring in International Studies with a Latin American focus and minoring in Portuguese. Marjorie studied abroad in Brazil through Greenheart Travel in High School. As a Changing Carolina Peer Leader through Student Health Services at USC, Marjorie presents about various health topics to freshman classes. She is also the Treasurer of DECA and Director of Marketing and Recruitment for Pillars for Carolina, USC’s extended orientation program. Read Marjorie’s blog from her travels in Brazil.

Travel and cultural exchange is important to me because it has allowed me to be comfortable in my own skin and not be afraid to take chances! Being exposed to different ways of life is the most rewarding and incredible experience in the world. Traveling has changed my life, and I can’t wait for the opportunity to make that possible for someone else!”

lisa-moranLisa Moran

Lisa Moran attends Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, where she hopes to double major in Anthropology and Spanish with a minor in Studio Art. On campus, she’s involved in the Voices for Planned Parenthood club, an all female acapella singing group, and also works as a tour guide. Read Lisa’s blog from her travels in India.

“Travel has always been important to me, but my passion for other cultures and languages really increased during my gap year between high school and college. Greenheart Travel’s volunteer trips in Costa Rica and India helped me uncover not only the immense diversity and beauty of worlds I never could have known otherwise, but also a passion within myself to do something meaningful, creative, and adventurous every day for the rest of my life. I hope to help other people realize the same capacity for cultural awareness and exploration in themselves.”

Tarik Shahzad

Tarik Shahzad is a senior International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma student at William Howard Taft High School in Chicago, Illinois. He is the captain of the debate team at his school and created an environmental club which focuses on inspiring future environmentalists. Outside of school, he volunteers at his local forest preserve and plays basketball recreationally with his friends. Tarik has a passion for environmental sustainability and dreams of attending a university that will help him to become a leader in his field and inspire others. Tarik visited Costa Rica through Greenheart Travel and volunteered at Proyecto Asis, a wildlife refuge center. This experience encouraged him to aim for the stars and instilled in him a deep belief that we are all responsible for protecting the environment.

“My experience abroad was unforgettable, and I will remember every moment for the rest of my life. I met amazing people, I visited a beautiful country, and I was able to help precious wildlife. Through my experiences, I have acquired a plethora of new, life-long friends.”

Allie HeadshotAllie Strick

Allie is a recent graduate of New York University where she majored in Art History and Italian Studies. She traveled abroad with Greenheart Travel her senior year of high school to Caceres, Spain where she became so attached to the country and culture that she returned to Spain six times after as a tourist, an English teacher, and as a project manager/linguist for a translation company. She has also backpacked extensively on solo journeys throughout Europe and spent a semester of college studying in Florence, Italy. She is currently preparing to embark on a fellowship program in Argentina where she will be working with at-risk children. Additionally, her brother recently followed in her footsteps and traveled to Spain with Greenheart Travel for a summer program. Read about Allie’s travels in her Alumni Spotlight.

“Making the unconventional decision to spend my senior year of high school abroad led me to become the person I am now. Though I sacrificed “the most important milestones in a teenage girl’s life,” i.e. prom, to live with a foreign family in an unfamiliar land, the experiences I had abroad opened my eyes in the most invaluable way possible, and I would not sacrifice that experience for anything. Traveling alone can be frightening and difficult, and it would be impossible for me to admit that I did not come across a great number of difficulties along the way, but these challenges I faced only made my journeys more exciting and memorable. As a result of my extensive travels, I am much more culturally aware, intelligent, brave, imaginative and resourceful than I could have ever imagined. I beseech every young person to take a risk and venture overseas alone.”

Emily Syverud

Emily Syverud is majoring in Biology and Spanish at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. Outside of class and studying, she plays on the lacrosse team, is a member of Delta Phi Omega sorority, serves as an Orientation Leader (Gustie Greeter) and hangs out with her friends. Emily studied abroad in high school with Greenheart Travel in Ireland. Read Emily’s blog from her travels in Ireland.

“I am a huge advocate for cultural exchange because of the amazing experiences I had and lessons I learned when I spent a semester in Ireland. I’m really looking forward to bringing Greenheart to my campus!”

Guy Whittaker

Guy Whittaker is a final year Social Anthropology student at the University of Manchester, England. He serves as Chair of the Anthropology Society and as a Peer Mentor for his degree, looking after first year students in his program. Guy has been on two Greenheart Travel volunteer programs; the first time he went to Costa Rica and the second time to Ibiza. He enjoys making videos and has made a video for Greenheart Travel which has over 250 views on YouTube! He also enjoys trying to improve the world through volunteering, signing petitions, and protesting. Guy hopes to carry on pursuing these interests in whatever he does after University. Check out Guy’s video from his time in Ibiza.

They say Pura Vida (Pure Life) a lot in Costa Rica…and it’s no joke. My experience in Costa Rica was just utterly amazing, and I completely fell in love with this little Central American country and Proyecto Asis. The ‘Ticos’ are beautiful people. They live simply, they make do and mend, they are self-sustained; there’s a lot we in the Western world could learn from them.”
