This course meets the highest international standards and is accredited and externally monitored by leading international accrediting bodies in the field of TEFL/TESOL.

The course curriculum is accredited by The International Accreditation of TESOL Qualifying Organisations (IATQuO), an independent accrediting body that exists to promote and maintain internationally acceptable standards in the training of teachers of English to speakers of other languages. They provide initial and ongoing external validation/accreditation services to training organizations who request them.

This course is internationally accredited and recognized, and it exceeds international standards for professional level TEFL Certification (most accredited TEFL courses run 106-120 hours) as set forth by the British Council and other leading bodies in the international field of TEFL.

International Standards:

Most schools, language institutes and Ministries of Education recognize TEFL certifications that meet certain basic standards that are also recommended by leading bodies in the field, including the British Council. These standards reflect those incorporated in to a standard, accredited intensive four-week TEFL class and include:

  • At least 100 hours of coursework and training
  • At least 6-20 hours of live practice teaching and observation involving actual ESL students (not peers – no role-playing)
  • External validation and accreditation by a recognized, independent body within the field
  • Course instructors hold at least a Master’s Degree.

Exceeding International Standards:

The 170 hour Online TEFL/TESOL Certification Course not only meets the above standards, but exceeds them. With 150 hours of training, this online course exceeds the industry standard by 50%.

Additionally, students participating in our course have the option of taking an extra 30 hours of specialized training (at no extra cost) for teaching business professionals and young learners. With these 30 additional hours, your certification will total 200 hours of training, which exceeds most other TEFL courses by approximately 70 percent.

Student Teaching

The term “practicum” refers to required practice teaching, observation and/or tutoring that you must complete in an ESL or EFL classroom setting to earn your accredited TEFL certification.

The 20 required practicum hours allow each student to gain first-hand experience teaching English and working with real ESL students, whether it is in an actual classroom setting, or by tutoring a non-native speaker privately. With a 20-hour practicum, exceeds the base industry requirement for practice teaching by more than 100%.

We encourage our students to complete these hours while they are still enrolled in the course to allow them to immediately practice what they are learning in the online class.

Completing your teaching practicum
Students typically complete their TEFL practice teaching and observation in their home community or wherever they are living when they are taking our 170-hour online TEFL/TESOL certification course.

As a TEFL student, you will arrange your TEFL practicum on your own, but assistance and guidance will be provided. Basically, you must spend 20 hours in a live ESL learning environment observing an ESL class, and/or practice teaching and tutoring ESL students in some capacity.

Opportunities to complete your TEFL practicum and practice teaching can typically be arranged in your community in these types of venues, which often offer ESL classes:

  • Community centers
  • Community colleges
  • Language schools
  • Local organizations that provide services to recent refugees or immigrants
  • Faith-based groups that offer ESL classes
  • Libraries

Once the TEFL practice teaching hours have been completed, the student provides an evaluation form, time sheet and one-page summary of their experience to the Student Affairs Department.

To accommodate those who do have a busy schedule, all students are given an automatic 30-day extension from the end of their class to complete their practicum. For example, for a course running from January 31 – April 15, all students have an additional 30 days from April 15 to complete their practicum.

If you begin teaching English abroad prior to the end of your course, any teaching hours you engage in can be applied towards your TEFL practicum requirement. However, please note that you will not receive your certificate until your practicum hours have been completed. If you need your TEFL certificate to qualify for your position, you will need to complete your practicum hours before you begin teaching English abroad.
