I’m staying with a host family in a little town named Luzzara in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy for the next 4 weeks. The dad makes parmigiano reggiano cheese and the mom works with students with special needs, so we have lots to talk about! They have been so welcoming and patient with the language barrier & I’m a happy gal!

Having once been a part of Austria, the Trentino region of Italy has a distinct culture because of influences from neighboring countries. The homes are more cottage-y, the locals learn both Italian and German in school, and the food has elements of both Italian and German cuisine. While in the area, I ate goulash with polenta, German style pickles with speck (a meat from to the Italian alps), and sooo many pastries. There is so much to try!!

I woke up at 5 AM yesterday because of the time difference, so I enjoyed a cup of coffee while watching the sunrise over the canals.

I had the privilege of preparing gnocchi with my host family’s nonna today. I photographed each step to help me remember when I make it at home because it’s one of Connor’s favorite foods! ✨

This is just a friendly reminder that social media isn’t always reality. Some of the most broken people I know put on the best happy facade on their social media. I don’t ever want to be that person, I want to be real, always. I’ve had a lot of people message me saying they wish they could be in my shoes, so to those people and everyone else: While I am always grateful for everything I have and every experience, I agreed to this journey knowing full well it would challenge me in every way. Things are not always sunshine and rainbows just because you’re in Europe. Vacation is much different than living in another country. This is the second time I have lived abroad and it will NOT be the last, but it is definitely pushing me to grow as a person more than I thought possible, already. None of the this is negative, just my truth. In the wise words of the late great Anthony Bourdain: “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.”

How much of human life is lost in waiting? Just a reminder to do what you’ve been waiting to do, because no one is ever fully “ready”. It’s not always easy, but always worth it to push yourself past the limitations that society or you have placed on yourself. ••• 📸: @michelleyherrera #travelforachange #greenhearttravel #travel #travelphotography #travelgram #rome #italy

I used to be the person who thought and overthought every detail of life, love, travel, etc. This past year really taught me that thinking can be detrimental. Let me elaborate. When a situation arises, our first instinct, or feeling, is almost always correct. It’s the thoughts that follow that ruin us. The justifications, going over every detail, making the logical decision, etc. Every time I’ve chosen the logical path whether it be in love, or any other aspect of life, I have ended up miserable. A relationship might look good on paper, and they might say all of the right things, but it’s how they make you feel that counts. Or in travel, if you plan out every detail then that typically causes stress. Getting wonderfully lost can lead you to the best places. Just a little food for thought next time you have a big decision to make. Happy Friday my people🌍 ••• #greenhearttravel #travelforachange #travelgram #travel #traveblogger #travelphotography

In the end, I’ve come to believe in something I call the ‘physics of the quest’, a force in nature governed by the laws of gravity. The rules of quest physics goes something like this: If you’re brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting and set out on a truth seeking journey, if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue, if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher and if you are prepared, most of all, to face and forgive some of the most difficult realities about yourself, then the truth will not be witheld from you. -Elizabeth Gilbert

What does this sign mean you may ask? Where am I? Great questions that I don’t know the answers to! I have spent a lot of my time here playing charades or having sweet @chiararigoletti_ and @lisarigoletti translate from Italian into English for me, which I am endlessly grateful for! Sometimes I’m super confident that I understood the Italian though but I am very wrong. For example, I thought this trail led to a mountain but it actually led to a restaurant 🙃 Needless to say, I am so inspired by my students that are learning English as a second language. They must be exhausted and they need a lot more credit than America gives them.
