Overview

Bienvenue en France!

The Teach in a Homestay program offers the opportunity for participants to become an English tutor in a local family while sharing their everyday life.

Participants spend approximately 15 hours per week tutoring the host family to improve their fluency in English. Usually participants will tutor the children in the home but occasionally and adult will request lessons as well. The rest of the time is yours to taste some of France’s world class wine and immerse yourself in French language, culture and lifestyle. The French are very proud of their contributions to art, literature, philosophy, architecture, films, sports, food and wine. From the Alps near the Italian and Swiss borders to the forest covered Vosges Mountains in the northeast, the Pyrénées along the Spanish border and the beaches on the Mediterranean, France offers breathtaking scenery.

Host families are not compensated for hosting and host only in exchange for the English lessons. Participants will have their own private room but may share a bathroom and living areas with the host family. Host families also provide three meals per day except on when going out to restaurants.

Homestay placements are located throughout the country so it is very important to be flexible about your placement location. Most host family placements are in medium to small cities with larger cities easily accessible via public transportation. As a Teach in a Homestay participant, you will be warmly welcomed into a host family’s home, while having the opportunity to explore the area on your own.

FAQs

Application Process and Requirements

How does the application process work?
To apply you must fill out the online Teach in a Homestay application. You then should gather all of the materials that are necessary for completing the application process. Once all of your materials are in, all of your documents will be sent to our partner in your host country for final review. Once you are accepted, our partners will find you a host family in the country where you chose to do your homestay.

When should I apply?
You should apply at least 8 weeks before your preferred departure date so that we have plenty of time to find the best host family match for you.

What are the qualification requirements?

  • At least 18 years old – retirees welcome!
  • Speak fluent English (other languages depend on specific demand)
  • Must be a high school graduate – college students and graduates preferred
  • Must have the ability to prepare a private tutoring lesson plan
  • Be a citizen of the EU, USA, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa or Canada

What is the visa application process?
A visa is not required for a tourist stay of up to 90 days (3 months) for most participants. Please check with the embassy of your host country to find out if a visa is needed.

Can I apply with my friend/spouse/significant other?
It is okay to apply with friends and family however we are not able to place more than one person with a host family. We will do our best to place you with host families in towns near each other so that you can visit each other on the weekends.

Host Families and Placement Locations

How is the host family selected?
Prospective host families undergo a rigorous screening process, and participants can rest assured that only suitable host families will be selected. In order to qualify as a host family, the prospective hosts must:

  • pass an interview and home inspection by a local coordinator
  • undergo a criminal background check
  • genuinely want to learn English as well as share their own language and culture with others

Can I choose where I will be placed?
You can choose which country you would like to be placed in however, you must be flexible about where you are placed within that country.

Where are participants usually placed?
Placements are nationwide and are typically in medium to small towns outside of usual tourist areas. This provides participants with opportunity to really experience full cultural immersion in their host country.

What should I bring as a gift for my host family?
It’s a great idea to bring a small gift with you for your host family. It would be nice to bring something that represents where you are from. Common gifts are chocolates, wine, coffee mugs, t- shirts, etc.

How the Teach English in a Homestay Works

Do I have to prepare a curriculum or lesson plan?
English lessons are very informal and there is no provided curriculum, however participants should be prepared to put together a lesson plan for each tutoring session. Greenheart Travel will provide a list of resources to help you come up with fun ideas for teaching your host family. Typically families will just request that you speak English with them over dinner or for a certain amount of time during the day.

What will I do when I’m not teaching the family?
When you are not teaching your host family English, you will have time to explore your new home and surrounding towns and cities. Host families usually work during the day but will show you around on the weekends.

What level of English do the host families have?
The level of English will vary depending on the host family but most will be at the beginner level and will only have basic knowledge of English.

Do I need to speak the language of my host country?
It is not a requirement that participants speak the language of their host country but it is recommended that participants try to learn some basic words and phrases before arriving.

Will I have to speak English all the time?
You only are required to speak English during the 15 hours of English lessons each week. The rest of the time, please feel free to practice speaking the language of your host country.

Please check with the embassy of your host country to find out if a visa is needed.

Complete the Online Application
There are 4 short steps in the application process which are outlined below. The whole application should not take longer than 20 minutes to fill out, but please answer the questions thoroughly and thoughtfully. This is the most important step in getting to know you and assessing your suitability to the project.

  • Step 1: Select the APPLY NOW button to the left. Once complete, you will receive a link in your email for the second part of the application (5 minutes)
  • Step 2: Provide more detailed information about yourself and why you would like to do a homestay abroad. This is also where you will complete your background check if you are a US citizen. If you are not a US citizen and over the age of 18, you are required to submit your own background check (usually available at local police offices).  Once complete, you will receive a link in your email for the final part of your application (10 minutes)
  • Step 3: There are two documents you must submit before we can consider your application – signed Terms and Conditions form and a copy of the photo page of your passport (3 minutes)
  • Step 4: Submit your $250 deposit. A deposit is required in order to reserve your spot on the program and is subtracted from your total program fee.  Once the deposit is submitted we can begin preparing you for your adventure abroad (2 minutes)

Review your Application
Greenheart Travel will thoroughly review your application and will contact you within 2-3 business days to confirm your acceptance. If we find something in your application that we have concerns about, we will let you know immediately. 95% of applicants are accepted on the program they apply for.

You’re Accepted – Now What?

Your program manager will be in touch with you directly about your acceptance. You should expect to receive an orientation packet via email, as well as a request to schedule your pre-departure orientation.

Finding the best host family for you is very important to us. Before we begin the host family screening and placement process, an additional $500 payment toward your program fee is due. This payment is required a minimum of 8 weeks prior to your departure.
